Succulent bulky feed plays an important role in the diet of cattle. Silage and haylage are produced by ensiling (fermenting) the green mass of herbaceous plants using biological or chemical preservatives.

What the use of preservatives provides:

  • reduces forage crop losses by 2–3 times (especially during harvesting and ensiling under atypical weather conditions) and ensures high feed quality;
  • feed output increases by up to 15–20% per year compared with conventional ensiling. One kilogram of any preservative additionally helps retain about 10 feed units and 1 kg of protein in silage, which can further yield 6–10 kg of milk or 1.5–2 kg of live-weight gain in animals;
  • stimulating lactic acid fermentation in the ensiled mass with preservatives is an effective and safe way to regulate microbiological and biochemical processes, and controlled fermentation produces higher-quality silage;
  • feed harvested using preservatives is not affected by fungi, does not rot, remains juicy, and is readily consumed by animals;
  • the composition of organic acids improves, and dry matter losses decrease.
